Non-denominational education and care for living and dying inspired by the wisdom and compassion of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings

The Spiritual Care Programme was established in 1993 in response to requests from healthcare professionals for practical ways to bring the compassion and wisdom of the Buddhist teachings presented by Sogyal Rinpoche in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying into their work and lives.

Our Spiritual Care Education Programme, spiritual care centres, and support groups are non-denominational and are open to all people regardless of religious or cultural background.

Over the past 17 years, we have worked with hospitals, hospices and universities, and trained more than 30,000 healthcare professionals and volunteers worldwide in all areas of healthcare and social services , and supported many people facing serious illness, death, or bereavement, and their families.

The Programme is particularly known for specialised training for those working in palliative, hospice and bereavement care. This year, we have expanded our professional training programme and launched, Compassion and Presence, a new series of courses and seminars relevant to all health and social care professionals. The professional curriculum introduces an integrated approach to the practical, emotional and spiritual dimension of care for living and dying that goes beyond conventional medical models. Participants learn step-by-step how to integrate mindfulness, meditation, and compassion practices appropriately in any setting. This approach supports healing and transformation, strengthens the capacity to care and can help to prevent and heal burnout.

As part of our commitment to raising awareness about the importance of spiritual care for living and dying, we have also organised a number of international conferences, most recently the 2009 Compassion and Presence Conference in Ireland, which was attended by over 500 people.

We also conduct training for institutions and community groups, providing:

  • special seminars and training programmes,
  • "in-service" training, and
  • advanced skills-training programmes.

If you would like to know more, please email the international programme manager or the national contact in your country.
